A city with a story, then the Kruger at walking pace — on a private concession few visitors ever see.
Two nights at a boutique hotel in leafy Houghton, Johannesburg, the suburb where Nelson Mandela lived, with a day for Soweto: Vilakazi Street, the Mandela Family Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial.
A short flight to Skukuza in the Kruger follows, and a night at an unfenced eight-suite lodge on a 12,000-hectare private concession that borders MalaMala and Sabi Sands. Then two nights at Plains Camp, home of Rhino Walking Safaris, where the concession is explored on foot — a four-hour walk each morning and a shorter walk and drive in the afternoon, in Big Five country closed to the public.

Days 1 & 2
Johannesburg and Soweto
Met at OR Tambo and driven about 30 minutes to a boutique hotel in Houghton, among jacaranda-lined streets near the Nelson Mandela Houghton estate. Three pools, one heated, a spa, a hot tub, a gym, a tennis court and a top-floor lounge looking over the city. Luxury Rooms have a king bed, a Nespresso machine, and an outdoor shower and bath.
Day 2 is set aside for a private guided tour of Soweto: Orlando Towers, Freedom Square in Kliptown, Regina Mundi Cathedral, Vilakazi Street, the Mandela Family Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial. We confirm the Soweto tour when we quote.

Day 3
Fly to the Kruger
Back to OR Tambo for a direct flight to Skukuza, then a ranger-led safari transfer to the lodge on its private concession. Lunch overlooking the dry Mutlumuvi riverbed and your first afternoon game drive, with stargazing through the lodge telescope after dark.
Eight thatched Bush Suites linked by raised walkways, each with a private deck, a freestanding bath and an outdoor shower, plus a pool and a bar deck over a waterhole.

Days 4 & 5
Walking with rhino
After the morning drive, move to an intimate trails camp on the same concession. Large en-suite tents with extra-length beds, a plunge pool, an honesty bar with soft drinks, beer, cider and house wine included, and a three-course dinner by candlelight.
A four-hour walk each morning and a shorter walk combined with a drive in the afternoon, tracking rhino and other game on foot. A night on a raised sleep-out deck under the stars can be arranged in advance, weather permitting.

Day 6
Departure
A final morning in the bush and a hearty breakfast, then your ranger takes you back to Skukuza Airport.
