Is bungee jumping safe? The Victoria Falls answer
111 metres, four seconds of freefall, and a lot of very dull paperwork keeping you alive. The dull part is the point.
Bungee jumping is a managed-risk activity, not a risk-free one. At Victoria Falls the 111 metre jump from the bridge is run by Shearwater Bungee with professional operators, equipment checks before every jump and published age, weight and medical limits. It costs US$194 per person plus a US$3 bridge toll.
What makes a bungee jump safe or unsafe?
Three things: the equipment, the people operating it, and whether the jumper tells the truth on the medical form. The cords and harnesses are rated, logged and retired on a schedule; the operators brief, weigh and attach every jumper; and the jumper is the only variable the operator cannot inspect.
That last one matters more than people think. The medical questions about heart conditions, back and neck injuries, pregnancy and recent surgery are not there to slow the queue down. Answer them honestly and the activity is well-managed. Answer them creatively and you have removed the main safety system.
How high is the Victoria Falls bungee jump?
Approximately 111 metres, from the historic Victoria Falls Bridge into the Batoka Gorge, with the Zambezi underneath. The freefall is around four seconds — long enough to think two complete thoughts, the second of which is usually unprintable.
The bridge itself was built in 1905 and still carries road and rail traffic, which is a reassuring thing to be told while standing on it and an alarming thing to remember while hanging off it. You can walk the structure properly on the bridge tour, which is US$64 and involves no jumping whatsoever.
What are the age, weight and health rules?
Operators publish and enforce them, and they are checked on the day rather than taken on trust. Jumpers under 18 need consent from a parent or guardian, and everyone is weighed before the cord is selected — the cord is matched to your weight, which is exactly as important as it sounds.
Anyone with heart, back, neck or blood pressure conditions, recent surgery, or who is pregnant should not jump. If you are not sure, ask us before you book rather than at the rail. The same rules broadly apply to the bridge swing and the gorge swing.
What does it actually feel like?
The worst part is the shuffle to the edge, where your legs are tied and your brain files a formal complaint. The jump itself is quick and oddly quiet. The rebound is the bit nobody warns you about: you come back up almost as far as you fell, twice, before the system settles and a crew member lowers a pole to collect you.
Photos and video are sold separately on the day, which is sensible, because nobody who has just jumped off a bridge is in a state to work a phone.
Should you do the combo instead?
If you are jumping at all, the combo is usually better value. The Big Air Experience puts the bungee, the bridge swing and the bridge slide on one ticket for US$250, against US$280 booked separately — see the adrenaline combo.
And if the whole idea appals you: the bridge slide is from US$58, takes an hour, starts at age six, and still gets you out over the gorge. Everyone goes home with a story, nobody has to jump.

Who should not bungee jump?
Anyone who is pregnant, or who has heart, back, neck or blood pressure conditions, or who has had recent surgery. Declare any medical condition before booking and the operator will advise.
What happens if I change my mind at the edge?
People do, and the crew are used to it. You are not pushed. If you pull out at the rail, the combo tickets mean the bridge swing or the bridge slide is still there as an alternative.
